Mr. Syed Azmat Hassan

Ambassador Syed Azmat Hassan (Retd.) holds an appointment  as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). Prior to joining academia as a practitioner, he has served for 34 years as a career diplomat for Pakistan. Among his diplomatic assignments, he was Ambassador of Pakistan in descending order to Morocco (1995-99), Syria (with responsibility for Lebanon) (1989-91) and Malaysia (1985-88). He was also Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations in New York (1979-80). At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Pakistan, Hassan held numerous assignments including Director General for Afghanistan, and headed the Middle East Division as Additional Secretary. He was also selected to serve as Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister of Pakistan for Foreign Affairs and Defense (1992-94).
Ambassador Hassan joined LUMS in 2006 after teaching successively at the School of Diplomacy and International Relations, Seton Hall University, New Jersey (2000-2006, 2012-2014). During this period he also held appointments at Columbia University (2009) and at Rutgers University (2006). He rejoined LUMS in 2015 and has been teaching there since then.
